The Remarkable Story
of the Wall Bench
A bench outside your front door might seem like the most ordinary thing in the world, but did you know that wall benches have been part of Dutch street life for centuries? From the Jordaan neighbourhood in Amsterdam to the famous stoops of New York, the wall bench has a fascinating history.
In this blog, we’ll take you on a journey back in time to discover how this typically Dutch tradition travelled across the world and why the fold-down wall bench is making a comeback today. After all, a wall bench is more than just a clever space-saving solution for small outdoor areas. Above all, it’s a place where people come together.

A Piece of Dutch History Right Outside Your Door
Take a stroll through the old streets of Amsterdam, and you’ll still come across them: benches attached to the walls of houses. Especially in working-class neighbourhoods like the Jordaan, they were once an essential part of everyday street life.
Back then, the pavement was much more than just a pathway to the front door. It was a place where neighbours came together. People enjoyed their coffee, caught up on the latest neighbourhood gossip and watched the world go by. No need to make plans to meet up. You simply pulled up a seat and joined in.
Wondering just how far back this tradition goes? Take a look at the famous painting The Little Street by Johannes Vermeer, dating back to around 1658. Even then, benches could be seen against the walls of houses. So, more than 350 years ago, people already knew the joy of having their own little seating spot right outside the front door.

From the Jordaan to New York
What many people don’t know is that this typically Dutch tradition even made its way across the Atlantic. When Dutch settlers arrived in New Amsterdam, which later became New York, in the 17th century, they brought their customs with them. And spending time outside on the doorstep was one of them.
In fact, the Dutch word ‘stoep’ still lives on today in the American word ‘stoop’. In New York, it refers to the characteristic front steps of houses, where neighbours gather, enjoy a drink and chat with passers-by.
Especially in neighbourhoods like Brooklyn, you can still see just how important that little space outside the front door is. A few chairs, some drinks, and before you know it, an impromptu neighbourhood get-together is in full swing.
Just like we used to do in the Netherlands!

From Amsterdam to New York
The Wall Bench Is Back.
And Smarter Than Ever!
At MaximaVida, we love furniture that brings people together. That's why we're giving the centuries-old Dutch wall bench a modern twist. Our fold-down wall benches combine the charm of the past with the convenience of today.
The idea is simple: securely mount the bench to your wall and fold it down whenever you want to sit. Finished enjoying the outdoors? Just fold it back up. That way, you'll always have a comfortable place to sit right outside your door, without a bench permanently taking up space on the pavement.
And that comes with plenty of benefits:
- More space: perfect for narrow pavements, small gardens, balconies and courtyards.
- A seat whenever you need one: step outside, sit back and enjoy the fresh air whenever you like.
- No moving furniture around: the bench stays attached to the wall, so there's no need to carry it in and out or find somewhere to store it.
- Sturdy and low-maintenance: made with solid oak slats and a robust metal frame.
- A welcoming spot outside your door: the perfect excuse to spend more time outdoors and connect with your neighbours.
Not Just for Your Home,
but for Cafés and Restaurants Too
A wall bench isn't just a great addition to private homes. It's also a smart solution for cafés, restaurants, shops and other businesses.
Especially in historic city centres, where every square metre counts, a fold-down wall bench allows you to create extra seating without having loose furniture permanently taking up space on the pavement. During the day, it offers an inviting spot for guests to sit down and enjoy a cappuccino. After closing time, simply fold the bench back up and keep the walkway clear.
Wall benches also create a welcoming atmosphere outside shops, offices and other public meeting places.
After all, when people have somewhere to sit, they're more likely to stay a little longer.

Our Wall Benches
A Small Bench with a Big Impact
We live in a world where so much of our communication happens through our phones. Yet some of the best conversations happen spontaneously. With a neighbour walking their dog. Someone from across the street stopping by for a chat. Or friends who decide to stick around a little longer during an evening stroll. A wall bench makes those little moments of connection even easier.
You don't need a big garden. Or a spacious terrace. And you certainly don't need a special occasion. Just fold down your bench, grab a coffee and enjoy what's happening outside. Who knows? A friendlier neighbourhood might just start at your front door.
At MaximaVida, we believe outdoor living doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need an enormous garden or a luxury outdoor kitchen to enjoy life outside.
Sometimes, all it takes is one great bench.
